John J. Fox grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He is a 1977 graduate of Collegiate School. He graduated from Washington & Lee University with a BA in U.S. History in 1981. After school he served on active duty in the U.S. Army for seven years as an armor officer and aviator. While living in the Atlanta, Georgia area for thirteen years he was a member of the Atlanta Civil War Roundtable. In 1999 he moved with his family back to Virginia and lives in Winchester. He is an advisory board member of Shenandoah University's McCormick Civil War Institute and a member of the Museum of the Confederacy and the Civil War Preservation Trust. He is also a member of Turner Ashby Camp #1567, Sons of Confederate Veterans. His 2004 book Red Clay to Richmond: Trail of the 35th Georgia Infantry Regiment, CSA has received considerable critical acclaim from fellow historians and book reviewers. His articles have appeared in Civil War Times and numerous newspapers. When he is not researching Georgia Civil War information he works as a pilot for American Airlines based in Washington, D.C.
