ANOTHER REBEL WIN
We are not surprised that the so-called American Civil War Center at
Historic Tredegar accepted a statue of losing Confederate President Jeff
Davis, a bona fide traitor. He stood for the cruel system of slavery and
persisted in prolonging the Civil War-even after it was obvious that the
hopelessly immoral and savage Confederacy was a Lost Cause.
Still, the center deceptively uses the slogan "In the Cause of
Liberty." It also unashamedly makes unscholarly claims that the center tells
the story of the Union, the Confederacy and African-Americans.
This notion is ridiculously funny.
The fact of the matter is that the Civil War was between two forces:
The victorious Union and the losing Confederacy, with about 200,000 black
Union soldiers arguably making the difference in the Union's triumph. These
freedom-fighting black soldiers were with the Union. They were not part of
another African-American military force, although they were subjected to
unfair treatment.
The acceptance of the Jeff Davis statue is another example of how the
center's board of directors-largely composed of Confederate sympathizers and
window-dressing types-uses deception, not solid scholarship, in its efforts
to sanitize the Confederacy's terrorist atrocities against black people.
The Jeff Davis gift is from the Virginia Division of the Sons of
Confederate Veterans, whose chief spokesman, Brag Bowling, himself, was
amazed by the center's acceptance decision.
Nevertheless, you can believe that he, along with the center's dominant
Confederate faction, will push to place Jeff Davis on the same memorial
plane as President Abraham Lincoln, whose miniature statue of Tredegar
grossly distorts history.
The center continues to disgracefully disseminate pro-Confederate
propaganda consistent with the mindset that created Monument Avenue, a
boulevard that spectacularly glorifies false heroes.
The people are not fools. The low attendance at the center shows that.
