The opportunity to place a monument on a National Battlefield doesn't
come along very often but we are pleased to announce the dedication of
the McGowan Monument at the Bloody Angle on the Spotsylvania Battlefield
on May 9 at 10:30 AM. There is scheduled artillery and a rifle squad to
participate in the dedication as well as a South Carolina and a Virginia
Color Guard.

The Brigadier General Samuel McGown Camp #40 in Laurens, SC spent years
in planning, fund raising, and ordering the beautiful monument that was
installed and will be dedicated at the Bloody Angle to honor the heroic
men of McGowan's Brigade. The base was created with a red trough that
when wet, reminds us of the blood shed by these men.

Our thanks go to those Virginians who helped with this project, especially:

Lee Hart
Grayson Jennings
Tom Davis
Joe Wright
Drew & G.W. Dickinson
(and others who I may have missed)

Photos taken during the excavation, pouring of concrete for the base,
and installation of the 2 piece monument, have been placed on the
Virginia Division Web site with a link to the home page announcement
section and events page. You can also view the page by clicking on the
link below:

I hope to see a good showing of our Virginia SCV members for this
dedication as North Carolina and South Carolina both plan to have a
large number of members present. Parking is limited at this site so you
should plan to arrive early. I'll see you there.

John Sawyer, Commander
Virginia Division SCV
